A.P. JENKS HAS RECEIVED TITLE

Title Has Been Conferred by Young Grandson and it is Official Dog Namer of the Family.

A. P. Jenks, cashier of the City National bank has a title. No it was not conferred upon him by Emperor William, King George or the high mogul of Timbuctoo. The title was given him by James McClung, his grandson, who resides with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. McClung in Greenville, O. He is the official dog-namer in the Jenks family.

The following letter is self-explanatory:

"Dear Grandfather:

"Daddy has made me a present of a full blooded bull dog. He is a dandy puppy. I want you to please send me a nice name for my dog. You know lots of names for puppy dogs. And as my dog is a jim dandy, I think that you can give him a nice name.

"I will show him to you all Easter time.

"With lots of love and kisses. From James."

And A. P. Jenks, has sent a name. In passing it might be mentioned that he is one of the most enthusiastic Tango dancers in the city. Nuff sed—you know the name.

LOCAL BOYS WIN SIGNAL HONORS AT CULVER ACADEMY

Parents Are Justly Proud of Youths Who Earn Distinction Among Thousands of Boys.

A number of Logansport boys who are attending summer school at Culver Military academy, have been awarded signal honors in competition with the thousands of other students at the school. Parents and relatives of the boys who reside inside this city are justly proud.

James McClung, young grandson of Mrs. A. P. Jenks of Ninth street, this city, has received the honor of sargeant major, the highest rank in the woodcraft department. Young McClung has won the honor through commendable work and interest in the school work during the past two summers, and his pleasing personality. He has been placed in immediate command. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl McClung of Ironton, Ohio, who are very well known in this city.

Major J. A. McClung Appears on Program

Major James A. McClung, former Logansport resident and commanding officer at Camp Wood, Eatontown, N. J., was selected to deliver the principal address during the annual Salute to the States held recently at Asbury Park, N.J.

Major McClung, who attended Logansport high school, was the son of Carl and Fannie (Jenks) McClung. His grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Jenks, prominent Logansport residents.

During the program, the flags of the 48 states of the United States were installed along the boardwalk at Ashbury Park.

Former Local Man Named Commander Of Training Group

Major James A. "Iron Lung" McClung, foremerly of this city, has been named commanding officer of the basic training group at Camp San Luis Obispo, California.

Major McClung is a grandson of the late A. P. Jenks of Ninth street.

He entered active service at Fort Monmouth in 1942 and was graduated from Officers Candidate school the same year. Shortly after receiving his commission he was appointed tactical officer at Fort Monmouth.

In 1945, Major McClung was transferred to Frankfurt, Germany, as claims and investigations officer with the 3118 signal service group. He later became commanding officer of the 13th signal service battalion in Germany.

He served as army security agency liaison officer of the training battalion special at Fort Monmouth, N. J., before being transferred to Camp San Luis Obispo, in February, this year, as training and administrative inspector at post headquarters.

Major mcClung now resides in Morro Bay with his mother, Mrs. Frances mcClung, and his aunt, Miss Ada Jenks.

Native of Logansport Is Advisor in Korea

Lt. Col. James A. McClung, a native of Logansport, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl McClung, is serving in Korea with the Korean Military Advisory group.

McClung, the grandson of the late A. P. Jenks, is a signal adviser and entered the army in 1941. He attended Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati.

Retirement Of Colonel Is Observed

FORT MONMOUTH — Lt. Col. James A. McClung, assistant executive officer of the U.S. Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory, retired from active duty today after nearly a quarter of a centery of Army service.

Col. McClung's departure was marked by a luncheon at Lincroft Inn, given by fellow officers and employees of the laboratory. Col. and Mrs. McClung live at 15 Edgebrook Ct., New Shrewsbury.

Col. McClung is considered one of Fort Monmouth's better known "institutions," but his service was varied. He started as an infrantry reserve officer with the 10th Infrantry Regiment of the Fifth Division in 1937. Three years later he entered the Signal Corps, and in 1942 he became senior tactical officer at the Signal Officer Candidate School here.

He later served as an instructor in the Advanced Officer School, the Combat Officers' Training Course and as chief of basic training on the staff of the commanding general. Sent to Europe in 1945, he served as commander of the 13th Signal Service Battalion; troop commander of the Army Security Agency Europe, and operations and training officer of the agency's Herzo Base.

Returning from Europe, he was secretary and S-3 of the ASA School, then at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. Then he returned to Fort Monmouth as commanding officer of Camp Wood and the Training Battalion Special. In 1951 he was assigned to Camp San Luis Obispo, California, as commanding officer of the Basic Training Group.

Departing for Korea, he was first assigned with KMAG and then as commanding officer of the 101st Signal Battalion IX Corps. Later he was deputy commander of the 22nd Signal Group at Scout.

In 1955, he returned to the states and was assigned to the U.S. Army Electronic Proving Ground as comanding officer, 72d Signal Battallion (Electronic Warfare), then as chief of the demonstration division. In November, 1958, he was again assigned to Fort Monmouth and assumed his recent duty as assistant executive officer.

Ten Honored at Fort Labs

James A.McClung

Mr. McClung, who is chief of Programs and Events at the Laboratories, is being commended for organizing or helping sponsoring groups to arrange and conduct major scientific symposiums and other presentations "which through their high standards have served as a vital medium for dissemination and interchange of information that has greatly benefited" the Army Electronics Command and the Laboratories.

Mr. McClung who has been with the laboratories since 1961, attended Indiana University.

He is a retired Army lieutenant colonel and lives at the New Shrewsbury address with his wife.

NEW SHREWSBURY —Maj. Margaret Whitehurst McClung (USA-Ret.), 59, of 15 Edgebrook Court, died Friday at Patterson's Army Hospital, Ft. Monmouth.

Maj. McClung was the wife of Lt. Col. James A. McClung (USA-Ret.) chief of protocol, programs and events at Ft. Monmouth.

Maj. McClung was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., and moved here 10 years ago.

She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Maj. McClung served more than 20 years in the Army Medical Service Corps, retiring in 1958. She was a member of the Ft. Monmouth and the national Retired Officers Association, and a member of the National Physical Therapists Organization.

Surviving besides are her husband are two nieces.

The Flock Funeral Home, Long Branch, is in charge of arrangements.

RED BANK — Lt. Col. James A. McClung, a retired Signal Corps protocol officer at Fort Monmouth, died sunday at the fort's Patterson's Army Hospital.

Lt. Col. McClung, 76, was born in Logansport, Ind., and lived in the Shore area since 1961. He moved here 10 years ago.

He was a member and past president of the Central Jersey Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10189, Rumson and Little Silver.

Lt. Col. McClung was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Tinton Falls.

He also was a member and past commodore of the Fort Yacht Cub, Oceanport.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

His wife, the former Margaret Whitehurst, died in 1968.

There are no known survivors.

The John E. Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
