Born June 10, 1927 in New Rochelle, NY, on the day Charles Lindburgh landed in Paris, Donald Alvin Lange was the son of German emigrants Alvin Howard Webster Lange and Estelle Schmeling, the sister of boxer Max Schmeling. When his mother passed while giving birth to his sister Barbara, his father remarried Eleanor Sulser, and moved his family to White Plains N.Y. His father worked as an accountant in New York City. His grandmother rented out an attic apartment in the home to artist Norman Rockwell who used Donald along with Uncle William Sulser as models in some of his works. During WWII, Donald joined the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen and was training for the invasion of Japan when the conflict ended. He was assigned to the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. in the Marine detachment escorting President Harry Truman. After his service he attended Ryder University in Trenton N.J. where he met his future wife Betty Rae Baker of Welch WV, whom he married on April 3, 1949. Moving to Winchester, Donald accepted a position as plant accountant for American Brakeblock Corporation, and later worked for Hottle & Willis. Changing careers, Donald then operated the Donut Shop, located on Valley Avenue until retirement. Unable to keep still, he then worked for Food Lion in Stephens City, where he acquired the nickname "Pappy", before retiring a second time. He is survived by his wife Betty and four daughters, and their husbands, Karen and John Jackson of Mechanicsburg, PA, Bonnie and Mason Cooper of Stephens City, VA, Doretta and Kevin Van Gilder of Winchester, VA, and Leslie and Randy Proffitt of Boyce, VA; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Lange of Honolulu, Hawaii. He is survived by his brothers, William Lange of Montvale, NJ, and his sisters, Linda Day-Denny of Skaneateles, NY, and Barbara Parton of Clearwater, FL. A funeral service will be held 10:00 A. M. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Stephens City, with Rev George Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 P. M. in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, VA, with military honors provided by American Legion Post #27. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers with the Deacons of the First Baptist Church serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 P. M. Betty Rae Lange, 89, of Stephens City, Virginia, died peacefully Friday, October 26, 2018 at Foxtrail Assisted Living, Stephens City surrounded by family and her loving care givers.
Mrs. Lange was born May 13, 1929 in Welch, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Ralph Thomas Baker and Gertrude Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Baker.
She was co-owner and operator of The Donut Shop in Winchester, Virginia.
She was married to Donald "Pappy" Alvin Lange who died May 7, 2014.
Surviving are three daughters, Karen Jackson and her husband, John, of Mechanicsburg, PA, Bonnie Cooper and her husband, Mason, of Stephens City, VA, and Leslie Proffitt and her husband, Randy, of Boyce, VA; a son-in-law, Kevin VanGilder of Winchester, VA; a sister, Joan Fleear of Virginia, Beach, VA; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Doretta Lynn VanGilder, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Stephens City with Rev. Kristin Whitesides officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
