At a service read yesterday morning, Miss Joyce Auer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Auer, 3728 Seneca street, became the bride of James W. Cates. son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Cates, 2729 Seneca street. The Rev. Anthony M. Meyer, pastor, officiated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. White mums and pompons together with tall white candles decorated the church.
Miss Agatha Pfeiffer played traditional wedding marches and the numbers during the mass which included "O Sanctissima," "Panis Angelicus" (Frank), and "Ave Maria" (Bach-Gounod). Miss Helen Dolan sang the hymn, "Jesus Thou Art Coming."
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white satin gown with fitted bodice, low neckline and long sleeves tapering to points at the wrists. Purple violets and stephanotis were atop the white prayer book she carried. The floor length veil of illusion cascaded from a tiara of looped satin and seed pearls.
Miss Janice Auer was her sister's maid of honor and wore a gown of ice blue satin styled like the bride's. Her headdress and mitts were of the same material as the gown and she carried a nosegay of pink snapdragons and pink pompons.
The three bridesmaids were Misses Shirley Morlock, Betty Lou Byrne and Patricia Speaker. All wore attires of shell pink satin designed with cap sleeves and small bustles. THeir headdresses and mitts matched their gowns and they carried nosegays of violets with pink streamers.
Jeanne Mallon, niece of the bridegroom, was flower girl. She wore a yellow silk Bo-Peep dress and carried rose petals in a basket.
Robert J. Fitzpatrick was best man and ushers were Roger F. Stahlin, John Messbarger and Francis X. Crotty.
The bride's mother wore a gray wool suit and the bridegroom's mother chose a brown gabardine suit. Both had corsage bouquets of pompons.
A reception was held at the Auer home. Serving refreshments were Misses JoAnn McMullan, Geraldine Carolus, Mary Helen Burrowes and Lois Steph. A tiered wedding cake centered the serving table and was encircled by stephanotis. Pompons were used throughout the house for decoration.
Mr. and Mrs. Cates left for a honeymoon in New Orleans. For traveling the bride wore a brown gabardine suit, matching accessories and green orchid corsage.
Showers given for the bride prior to her wedding included those of Misses Byrne, Speaker, Norma Jean Hughes and Morlock.
