That the war will cease before spring is the belief of a brother of Louis Charon who writes interesting letters from his post with the Second Bavarian Landwehr, Infantry No. 5, since war was declared. He has been stationed at different points along the French frontlines and has seen active service for Germany since August 11, 1914. This letter was closely censored and all references to the town, where his regiment is now located, has been deleted. He says:
"I left home August 5, 1914, and was immediately sent to Dionze, where the battlefield was being cleared after a heavy engagement. It was my duty to remove the dead and dying French soldiers, who had then lain for eight days in the scorching August sun. You can imagine how horrible it was. Since then we have been under artillery fire at least a part of every day, but I am fortunate that I no longer have to lie in the trenches and carry a knapsack. I am now "Marketender" for our battalion and have to provide a thousand men with necessities. However, living in houses is not what it used to be and when the French artillery fire commences we, of the commissary department, have to hie to the cellars, and as the enemy are apt to open fire during the night, we usually sleep there. It isn't exactly pleasant for one used to the comforts of life."
He also asked if German newspapers and German war news are circulated in the United States and says "who would have thought in August, 1914, that we would still be in the trenches? And now the Balkans have entered the struggle! I am certain, nevertheless, that the war will be finished before the winter is over."
Notwithstanding his long experience, Adolph Charon is in the best of health and spirits.
