After moving to Hinsdale in 1965, it wasn't long before Arthur E. Giddings became active within the village, both as a parent and public servant.
For several years, Mr. Giddings was a member of the Community Relations and Park and Recreation Committees. He also later served as a trustee on the Hinsdale Village Board from 1975-79. He held numerous posts in the local youth sports league and was president of the McDonald's Hinsdale Swim Club when his children were young.
"He loved getting involved and was proud of the accomplishments and friends he'd made over the years," said his wife, Barbara. "We'd kid him every now and then about popping a few buttons whenever his name came up in connection with something good he helped create in the community."
Mr. Giddings, 73, of Willowbrook, formerly of Hinsdale, died of emphysema Monday, July 21, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
During the early 1980s, Mr. Giddings also played an important role in founding the Hinsdale Center for the Arts. After serving as its president in the early years, he became a lifetime trustee in 1999.
"He knew the center would have a very positive impact on the village, both in terms of the arts and in bringing residents together," his wife said.
Mr. Giddings spent his early childhood in LaGrange before moving with his family to Downers Grove, where he graduated from high school in 1948. After receiving a bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management from the University of Denver in 1952, he worked for several years as a manager for Harding-Williams Food Service, an industrial catering company in Chicago.
"He spent his summers during college working in the cafeteria at Western Electric in Cicero," his wife said. "That's where his interest in food service and preparation was first sparked."
In the early 1960s, Mr. Giddings became an executive with Interpoint Corp., a food-service company that built restaurants along highways.
After retiring in 1996, Mr. Giddings helped manage his son's golf course in Stevens Point Wis., a job family members said he was well-suited for because of his managerial skills and love for the game.
"He had experience in the business world and really enjoyed golfing, so it was the perfect arrangement for both of them," his wife said.
Mr. Giddings and his wife moved to Willowbrook in 1990.
Other survivors include two sons, James and Robert, and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Hinsdale United Methodist Church, 945 S. Garfield St., Hinsdale.
