Mildred Swift Hammond

Mildred Alice Swift was born in Eugene, Oregon on January 21, 1915 to Clide (Parks) and Edward Y. Swift. She lived her entire life in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, devoted to her family and her church. As a young girl she loved roaming the fields at home with her dogs. She learned the piano and as an adult played for services at Pleasant Hill Church of Christ. Mildred was on the first girls' basketball team at Pleasant Hill High School and was valedictorian of her class. She became a stenographer at Eugene Business School and after raising her family, worked for the Pleasant Hill School District for 15 years, primarily as executive secretary to the superintendent.

In 1938 Mildred married her neighbor and high school classmate, Robert C. Hammond. He died in 1982. They had a son, Ron, and a daughter, Marilyn, both living; a second son died at birth. Four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren brought great delight to Mildred, as did her friends at Trent Church of Christ.

Mildred loved to travel. She visited the Hawaiian islands five times, toured several countries in Europe and was a "leaf peeper" in New England and Nova Scotia. She traveled to the American Southwest, British Columbia, Florida and the East Coast. She was a fan of television entertainment. In later years, she spent many hours on her front deck with her cat, surrounded by flowers, looking over the fields she loved. She died of age-related causes on December 14, 2013.

A Celebration of Mildred's Life will take place at Trent Church of Christ in Dexter on Saturday, January 25 at 2 p.m.
