Miss Nora Holthouse, 83 years old, who was associated with juvenile probation work in Waynce county for 38 years before her retirement in 1959, died Sunday. She resided at the Leland hotel.
Miss Holthouse started her work in the probation field in 1921 under Miss Elizabeth Candler, probation officer. She assumed the post of probation officer in 1933.
She became assistant to Dale Defibaugh Jan. 1, 1959 when he took over the probation office. She resigned her assistantship in February of the same year.
During her years of service, Miss Holthouse said understanding and reform always had been her chief tools in handling wayward children.
Until her retirement, Miss Holthouse had been at the county courthouse since she was 15 years old. Her father, Bernard Holthouse, was recorder when he suffered a stroke. She helped out as his deputy, served as deputy under several others, and in 1919, beame agent of the Board of Children's Guardians, a group which became extinct after the formation of the County Welfare board.
She was a member of First English Lutheran church and Business Women's club. Miss Holthouse had served 30 years as patroness of the Kappa Delti Phi sorority.
The only survivors are a niece, Mrs. Willard Morgan and two nephews, George Tripp and Reid Myrick, all of Richmond.
Services for Miss Holthouse will be held Wednesday at 3 p. m. at the Doan and Johnson mortuary. Rev. A. R. Swasko will officiate. Burial will be in Earlham cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary Tuesday from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m.
The Kappa Delta Phi sorority will hold memorial services at the mortuary Tuesday at 7 p. m.
