In a single ring ceremony, read by the Rev. J. C. Poole, pastor of the Methodist church, Miss Hazel Houston was united in marriage to J. T. Goodman on Easter morning. Mr. and Mrs. Verda Goodman and family and L. A. Houston witnessed the ceremony. Following the marriage a wedding dinner was served at the home of Mrs. Fay Smith.
Mrs. Goodman is the daughter of L. A. Houston of this city. She is a graduate of the Monticello, Iowa high school and after returning to vandalia attended the high school here, taking a teacher's training course. She has taught several years in the rural schools near here and taught the Sunrise school near Benton City this school term.
Mr. Goodman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verda Goodman, graduated from the Pleasant Plain school and since then has been engaged in farming.
The couple will make their home on the McCune farm in the Pleasant Plains neighborhood.
Hazel Goodman, 85, of Vandalia, died April 19, 2001, at Tri-County Care Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at the Holt Funeral Home in Vandalia. Visitation will be held Saturday, April 21 from 11 a.m. until time of the service. The Rev. Ron Franklin will officiate. Mrs. Helen Giltner will play the organ. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery.
Mrs. Goodman was born in Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Pearl Brooks Houston. She is survived by four grandchildren, Renee Dowell of Vandalia, Stephanie Ann Teague of Perry, Christopher "Kit" Goodman of Waverly, Iowa and Kris Goodman of Vandalia; one sister, Margaret Trott of Washington; five great-grandchildren, Cody and Colton Dowell, Micah Trower, and Christopher and Tyler Sydenstricker. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Harold Houston, two sisters and one son, Steve Goodman.
Mrs. Goodman had lived in the Vandalia area all of her life. she was a member of the Vandalia Church of Nazarene. Hazel was a very special Christian and a wonderful grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.10039
