Funeral Set Tuesday For Capt. S. M. Houston

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for Capt. Samuel M. Houston, 77, a retired ship's master, who died yesterday. Time for the services has not yet been set.

Captain Houston, of 3473 Mayfield avenue, sailed ships for 56 years, 43 of them as master, before leaving the maritime service in 1953.

During his career he was involved in the Mexican revolution of 1913 and his ship was sunk by a German submarine in 1942

Picks Up Survivors

A distant relative of Sam Houston of Alamo fame, he picked up the survivors of a ship blown up by rebels in the port of Progresso in 1913 and carried them to safety aboard the Morro Castle.

In 1942 a German submarine torpedoed his freighter, the S. S. Edith, 150 miles of the western end of Haiti.

Captain Houston commanded two liferafts which carried survivors to Jamaica a week later.

Over the years he had visited nearly every port in the Western Hemisphere.

He is survived by his wife, Edith A., two sons, Bradford N. and Carman B., of Hardyville, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Roberta T. Howes, and a sister, Helena L. Houston, of Verona, N.J.
