Joan Howell Becomes Bride of Robert Farmer

Miss Joan Florence Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Elliot Howell, exchanged marriage vows with Robert Denton Farmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rob Roy Farmer of San Diego, at a beautiful candlelight ceremony Saturday evening at eight o'clock in the First Congregational Church. The Reverend Doctor A. H. Ackley officiated during the impressive single ring ceremony.

The bride who was given in marriage by her father was lovely in a gown of white satin and marquisette. It was fashioned with a satin bodice with seed pearl design and marquisette filling in the round neck. Full marquisette sleeves were gathered at the wrist and the skirt was bouffant marquisette entrain. Her fingertip tulle veil and blusher fell from a halo of orange blossoms. Complementing her bridal attire was a spray of stephanotis and tuberous roses centered with a white orchid. She carried a lace handkerchief which was carried by her mother at her wedding.

Miss Florence Howell, sister of the bride, and who assisted as maid of honor, was beautifully gowned in white lace fashioned along simple, effectively cut lines. Her bouquet was of Talisman roses and she wore red blossoms in her hair.

Assisting Mr. Farmer as best man was Elmo Clapper of San Diego, and duties of ushers were carried out by Jack Jackson, Alan Hughes, and Joe Botte, all of San Diego.

The First Congregational Church presented a lovely background for rites, white gladioli combined with ferns banked against the altar. Rows of tall white candles flanked the floral arrangement.

Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Thomas Ridley sang the ever-lovely "Because" with organ accompaniment. Schubert's "Ave Maria" and "Love Song" by Tschaikowsky and other selections were also played at the organ prior to the service.

Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Dean Howell residence with guests calling to extend best wishes and congratulations to the bridal pair. Mrs. Howell, gowned in an egg shell crepe dinner dress with a cinnamon brown feather hat, and Mrs. Farmer in a soft blue dinner dress with a small blue velvet hat, received the guests. Mrs. Howell's corsage was flame-colored begonia blossoms and Mrs. Farmer wore a corsage of pink begonias.

The receiving line stood before the fireplace, the mantel of which was banked with white gladioli forming the shape of a crescent. Gladioli were also arranged on the buffet. The handsome three-tiered wedding cake was surrounded with white blossoms and flanked by tall white candles.

Assisting with the serving were Mrs. Murray Howell, Mrs. George Slivkoff, Mrs. Francis Oaks, Mrs. Carmelo Gugino, jr., Miss Eleanor Howell, and Miss Robbie Farmer and Miss Betty Jean Overstreet, both of San Diego.

Mr. Farmer and his bride left for a short honeymoon, following which they will make their home at 3283 Mission Boulevard in Mission Beach.

For her going away costume, the bride selected a smartly tailored brown wool suit with indistinct stripe of blue, complemented with dark brown accessories. Her corsage was a white orchid.
