A native of Colby, Kan., Miller was a youth of 19 when he was killed March 17, 1945, in his first action with Company B of the 26th infantry.
A letter to his father, Ira Thomas Miller of 1751 Gold, explained that the company had made a forced night march to a new bridgehead and went directly into combat. They crossed the river and were fighting uphill against German positions when Miller fell.
Born in Colby on March 6, 1926, Miller attended high school in Collyer and was inducted into the army on July 5, 1944. After training at Camp Maxey, Tex., and Camp George Mead, Md., he was assigned overseas in February of 1945.
Besides his father, he is survived by his stepmother, Mrs. Edith Miller, and two half brothers, Eugene and Leroy, born since his death. They are at the home address in Wichita. His grandparents, Mr and Mrs. John Howerton, Noel, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Miller, 1133 North Broadway, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Lou Miller, also survive.
Memorial services were held in the First Presbyterian church in Wakeeney on May 20, 1945. The Broadway mortuary is in charge of the reburial service which will be held in Wichita Park cemetery.
