Announcement was made today of the inclusion of Sue A. McLennan of Escondido in "The Badge of Honor," an anthology of contemporary American verse, to be published at Christmas by Poetry House of New York. An editorial staff of five critics chose 290 poets out of several thousand for representation in the book. Accompanying the poems is a biography of each poet.
The judges are now engaged in determining the winner of the award which Poetry House has offered to the contributor of the best work in the anthology.
The accompanying biography:
Sue A. McLennan was born in Iowa, the daughter of a man who had been in the California "gold rush" of 1849 and during the Civil War had been correspondent for a New York daily. Hence her literary tendencies are inherited. She was educated in Oskaloosa college, now merged with Drake university. After a varied experience teaching in the Dakotas, she was married to Donald D. McLennan, a Canadian, and seeking new fields, the couple moved to Montana. There followed a life of ups and downs for the McLennans, during which Mrs. McLennan shared her husband's existence of cattle ranching and mining, and part of the time taught school. Mr. McLennan became interested in the silver boom, and after the deflation of that hope, started with his wife on a trek to California on horses. There were hair's-breath escapes for the two, and the danger increased as they pushed into the Mojave Desert. They came thru, however, and reached California only to move on to Arizona for the sake of Mr. McLennan's health. When their thriving cattle ranch was ruined by the floods, they decided to locate their home in Escondido, California. There Mrs. McLennan, who later experienced the bereavement of her husband, had benn living for the last thirty years engaged in citrus fruit raising. Her verse has appeared in booklet from and in prominent anthologies. In earlier years, Mrs. McLennan wrote articles on Prohibition and Woman Suffrage.
