Sylvester "Syl" Purinton, 78, of Hillsboro, died May 25 at Home.
Sylvester was born Dec. 25, 1913 in Alliance, Neb., the only son of Ernest and Gay (Rust) Purinton.
He married Wilma Fenner, April 12, 1936 in Alliance, where they operated a dairy farm. They brought their family to Oregon in 1955. Mr. Purinton lived in Hillsboro for 36 years, and he worked at Carnation Can for 24 years.
He enjoyed building things for his family, gardening, playing cards, visiting and helping his many friends in the community. Although Mr. Purinton was an only child, he enjoyed a sibling relationship with his surviving in-laws who are listed, according to the obituary notice.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Purinton of Hillsboro; daughters Marlene Bakcer of San Antonio, Texas, Linda Versander of Troutdale, and Susan Purinton-Sjolander of Salem; son Larry Purinton of Beaverton; eight grandchildred; two great-grandchildren; and in-laws Arthur and Laura Fenner; Ralph Fenner; Helen Fenner; Leonard and Gladys Fenner; Patrick and Thelma McGrory; Bob and Dorothy Fenner; and Elsie Fenner.
Services were May 28 at Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro, which handled arrangements. Interment followed at Lebanon's IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Society in care of Tuality Hospital through the funeral home.

Wilma Jeanette Purinton 85, formerly of Lebanon, died Oct. 15, 2004, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.
Funeral services were held Oct. 30 at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Hillsboro. Inurnment was Nov. 4 at Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
She was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Alliance, Neb., one of nine children of Chester and Effie (Rodgers) Fenner.
Her family lived in Lebanon.
In 1936, she married Sylvester "Sly" Purinton in Nebraska. They were married for 56 years.
They operated a dairy farm before moving to Hillsboro.
Survivors are daughters Marlene Becker of San Antonio, Texas, Linda Varsander of Gresham, and Susan Meyer of Cornelius; son Larry Purinton of Rock Port, Texas; brother Art Fenner of Lebanon; sister Thelma McGrory of Lebanon; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
