WOULD ABDUCT LITTLE CHILD

STRANGE ACTING MAN MAKES EFFORT TO TAKE AWAY LITTLE MARY ELLEN COAST

Yesterday shortly before noon a strange acting man apparently attempted, by force to abduct little Mary Ellen Coast, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Coast. The little girl in company with her nurse, Miss Weber was walking along Dubuque street near the Y. M. C. A. hall when the stranger, a rough looking man came up and taking hold of the little girl attempted to take her away from Miss Weber. Miss Weber resisted and a young man coming up interfered and the man disappeared down the street.

It is not known whether the party had criminal intentions, wishing to steal the child, or whether he may have been partially demented. An attempt was made by the police to locate the man but they have not been able to do so.

While the man was attempting to take the little girl six new Buick cars were stopped nearby, each car with a driver and all watching the fray. Miss Weber believes the man belonged to this bunch.

County Attorney Casey was called into the case and made an effort to locate the drivers of the cars. Accordingly word was sent to Marengo and Grinnell and it is said that a man answering the description given of the would be abductor was with the procession of cars as they passed thru these towns. At one place they said they were headed for Missouri, at another they said they were going to New Mexico.
