Problem Drinker Hangs Self

Edward R. Rising, 48, of 37 Blythdale avenue, resolved his drinking problem yesterday by hanging himself from a cypress tree in a remote corner of McLaren Park.

Partially crippled by arthritis, Rising had been unable to work for nearly ten years. During his long semi-invalidism, his frail, 43-year-old wife Hildred had supported him and their two children by working as a waitress.

Mrs. Rising told officer Jack Heald she and her husband quarreled Monday night over his drinking.

"Can't you do something?" she said she asked him. "We haven't money for this."

Mrs. Rising said her husband turned on her in a rage and replied, "I'll do something right now."

She said he hobbled into the garage, cut off a length of wire clothes line and started off.

In a panic, Mrs. Rising called police. Five Potrero squad cars responded and searched the area.

An hour and a half later the patrolmen found Rising. He had climbed the cypress tree, knotted the wire around his neck and jumped.
