Josiah Shedd, M. D., born in Rindge, N. H., 1 Nov. 1781, on becoming of age settled in Peacham, Vt. Several years later he took up the study of medicine with Dr. Luther Jewett of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and later at Dartmouth College where he received his medical degree in 1823. He practiced his profession for many years in Peacham and the surrounding towns, was regarded as a skilful physician, took a prominent part in local public affairs and by his energy and good judgment in investments accumulated a fortune of nearly $75,000, of which he gave $20,000 to various benevolent societies. A stroke of apoplexy suddenly ended his life on 4 Sept. 1851.
He married in Peacham, 1 Mar. 1812, Lydia Chamberlain, born there 18 Apr. 1790, daughter of Gen. William and Jane (Eastman) Chamberlain; she died in Peacham 15 Dec. 1862. Her father was the most prominent man of his generation in Caledonia County, serving twelve years in the Vermont Legislature, seventeen years as chief-justice of Caledonia County, seven years as a councillor, two terms as a member of Congress, and lieutenant-governor of Vermont 1813 to 1815.
