James C. Sheldon, whose untimely death occurred at Clifton Springs Sanitarium early Monday, was another of the Randolph men who went to New York and made a name for himself in the big city. As partner in a Wall Street legal firm, as executive secretary of the Investment Bankers Association, and as a man well known in political affairs he fulfilled the promise he made as a youth in his home town.
Beginning his political career even before he had reached voting age he was ready at the first opportunity to run for office and was elected justice of the peace in this township the spring after he attained legal age. His earnest work as a partisan got him recognition in the Constitutional Convention of 1904, where he was an assistant clerk, and soon after there was a place in the capitol at Albany where he served as revision clerk.
The acquaintance he made throughout the county gave him an advantage when he became candidate for member of assembly and he held to his friends throughout, with a result that he succeeded himself as member of assembly twice. During his service at Albany he had made contacts in New York which resulted in an opening there at the end of his third term in the assembly.
Close applicaiton to his work in the city prevented Mr. Sheldon from more than casual visits to Randolph, but his mother, Mrs. Frances Sheldon, has spent much time in his eastern home. For her and all her son's family the sympathy of this community is expressed.
