Hartford Courant, October 31, 18786136
Mr. Sydney Stanley of this city, who died a week ago or more, left between $5,000 and $10,000 in money and a half ownership of a farm in Tolland. His will, which has just been admitted to probate, makes the trustees of the Watkinson Library the managers of all his personal property, requiring them to pay his sister the income from the same during her life. At her death the personal property and real estate both shall revert to the trustees for the benefit of the library. His books he leaves to the Watkinson library, but duplicates of that library's volumes may be given either to the Hartford Library (Young Men's Institute) or the Connecticut Historical Society.
Mr. Stanley was a very quiet man and a remarkable antiquarian. He found many valuable old prints and papers in the course of years of search among the waste at paper mills, and from him Mr. Brinley bought a number of his rare works. He gave more volumes to the Connecticut Historical Society than any other person ever gave to it. Mr. Stanley came to Hartford about 1854, and Dr. J. Hammond Trumbull, the secretary state, discovering his talents, employed him to engross bills, which he did with great cleverness. He held the place of engrosser for many years. His knowledge of history, is said to have been very nearly complete. There seemed nothing that he did not know all about on that subject. For sixty years he has been a subscriber to The Courant.
