Lawrence B. Swan, son of George A. Swan, and the late Edna B. Swan, of East Randolph, and his wife, of Elmira, recently advised local residents of the death of their son and only child, Staff Sgt. Jack B. Swan, 22, of the U. S. Army Air Corps. No details of the death of Staff Sgt. Swan were reported, although the letters made it apparent that the Elmiran had been hospitalized, possibly in Australia, from the last of May until his death October 23, 1942.
The letter from the Adjutant General said: "It is with profound regret that I inform you an official report has now been received stating that your son, previously reported as 'mising' died October 23, 1942, as the result of an aeroplane crash due to enemy action."
Sgt. Swan after his preliminary training at Mitchel Field, passed an examination qualifying him for a five-month course in aerial photography at Chanute Field, Ill. Advanced training at Lowry Field, Denver, Col., followed when he stood second in his class. After sixteen months in the service, Swan was promoted to staff sergeant.
The order of the Purple Heart came last week to Mr. and Mrs. Swan at Elmira, awarded posthumously to their son. This is the second Order of the Purple Heart to be preserved at the Swan home, Mr. Swan also received the award in World War I, after he was wounded and gassed in action with the 27th Division, Company I of Olean, while breaking through the Hindenburg line on September 28 and 29, 1918.
Other relatives of Staff Sgt. Swan, besides the grandfather, are an aunt, Mrs. Coyle Swan Marsh, and a great-aunt, Mrs. Minnie Glover, of East Randolph, and an uncle, Lester Swan, this village.
