Attendants Are Chosen for Sweet-Sortwell Wedding

—Miss Elise Pollard Sortwell will have her three sisters as her only attendants when she becomes the bride of Alfred Jay Sweet Jr. of Swampscott, on Friday, at St. John's Church in Beverly Farms. Daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin F. Sortwell of "Twin Cedars," Beverly Farms, Mrs. George H. Clement (Anne Sortwell) and Mrs John H. Perry (Frances Sortwell) are to be the bridesmaids and Miss Cynthia Sortwell will be the maid of honor. Rev. W. F. A. Stride of Hamilton, uncle of the bride, will perform the 4 o'clock ceremony, assisted by Rev. Bradford H. Burnham. The bride will be given in marriage by her father.

John W. Sweet has just arrived from Paris to serve as best man at his brother's wedding. The bride's brother, Alvin F. Sortwell Jr., will head the ushers, who are to include Charles R. L. Sturgis, Charles Tifft Jr., George C. Clement, R. Lentner Sewall and John R. Hollister.

"Twin Cedars" is to be the scene of the reception following the ceremony, where only members of the immediate family will gather.

FORMER AUBURN YOUNG MAN WEDS BEVERLY, MASS., GIRL

The marriage of Alfred Jay Sweet Jr., son of Mrs. Alfred J. Sweet of Swampscott, Mass., formerly of Auburn, and the late Mr. Sweet, to Miss Elise Pollard Sortwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Foye Sortwell of Beverly Farms, Mass., was solemnized last Friday afternoon in St. John's church, Beverly Farms, with the bride's uncle, Rev. William F. A. Stride, officiating.

Attendants were the bride's three sisters, Mrs. George C. Clements, Mrs. John Hazen Perry and Miss Cynthia Sortwell; John W. Sweet, brother of the groom, as best man and George R. Clements, John Hazen Perry, Charles Tifft Jr., R. Lentner Sewall and Alvin F. Sortwell Jr. as ushers.

The bride wore a lovely hoop-skirted gown of ivory satin with a yoke of tulle and pearls and her long tulle veil was fastened to her hair by a coronet of tulle and pearls. She carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley with a tulle ruffle. Her sisters wore white taffeta gowns with white bonnets trimmed with gold ostrich plumes and carried bouquest of chrysanthemums and zinnias.

Mr. Sweet lived in Auburn at the time his father was associated with Lunn and Sweet Co. shoe manufacturers. He prepared for college at Choate school, Wallingford, Conn., and attended Yale University. He is a member of the Essex Country club, Yale club of New York, Eastern Yacht club and the Exchange club.

The bride, a member of the Junior League, made her debut in 1935 after graduation from the Westover school.

Changing their original plan for a wedding trip to Europe, Mr. and Mrs. Sweet have gone to Honolulu instead.

BEVERLY

Lt. Alfred Jay Sweet Jr., USA, 29, was killed in action in Germany Dec. 3, according to word received today by his wife, Elise P. Sortwell, of "Bittersweet Field," Beverly Farms. He was the father of four children, went overseas in October and was the son of Mrs. Alfred J. Sweet and the late Mr. Sweet of Swampscott.

Lt. Sweet was graduated from the Choate School and attended Yale. His clubs included the Exhange, Essex County, Easter Yacht and Yale Club of New York. They have two sons and two daughters.

Elise Wigglesworth, active in GOP

BEVERLY — Funeral services for Elise S. (Sortwell) Wigglesworth, a member of the Republican State Committee, will be held at 2 p.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Hale st., Beverly. Mrs. Wigglesworth died Sunday at her home on Preston Place. She was 61.

She was the widow of Thomas Wigglesworth, a former Beverly alderman who died in 1959. She was also the widow of Alfred J. Sweet Jr. who was killed in 1944 while serving in the armed forces.

mrs. Wigglesworth was elected to the Republican State Committee in 1974 and was an active member of the massachusetts Federation of Republican Women. She was a delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

She was a close friend and volunteer aide to Mrs. Jessie Sargent while her husband was governor and was a long-time member of the Beverly Republican City Committee.

In addition to her political interest, she served as a volunteer at the Beverly Hospital Coffee Shop for more then 30 years and was a past chairman of the North Shore Mental Health Association.

She was a 1935 graduate of the Westover School of Middlebury, Conn.

She leaves six children, Mrs. Robert (Pauline) Herold of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Alfred J. Sweet 3d of Essex; Peter S. Sweet of Newburyport; Mrs. Cecil C.I. (Elise) Wylde of South Dartmouth; Thomas Wigglesworth of Rowley and Mrs. Graham (Anne) McK. Walker of Stroudsburg, Pa.; a brother, Alvin Sortwell Jr. of Beverly Farms; two sisters, Mrs. Harry W. (Cynthia) Castleman fo Louisvill, Ky., and Mrs. Anne Clement of Ligonier, Pa., and eight grandchildren.

Alfred J. Sweet, III, age 69 years, husband of Constance (Rogers) Sweet, died on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Beverly Hospital. Born in Boston, he was son of the late Alfred Jay Sweet, Jr. and Elise Sweet Wigglesworth.

Mr. Sweet was 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a former Sports Editor for the Beverly Times and Vice President of sales at VGP Publishing. His two great loves were animals and music.

Surviving him in addition to his wife, are his children, Cynthia Wylder Sweet of Gloucester, and Alfred Jay Sweet, IV of Essex; his siblings, Dr. Pauline Sweet of Brooklyn, NY, Peter Sortwell Sweet of Newport, RI, Anne Wigglesworth Walker of Baldwin City, KS, and Thomas Wigglesworth of Beverly Farms, MA; his grandchildren, Graham Lawrence Wylder Sweet and Hugo MacGregor Sweet; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was also brother of the late Sally Sweet Dean of Decatur, GA.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Beverly Farms on Friday, June 17th at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements by the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, Beverly.
