A son of Oregon and pioneer of Klamath County since 1891 when he was two years old, Ernest H. Taylor can lay true claim to having done his part in the early development of the ranch section of this county. He was born in Ashland, Jackson County, January 10 1889, the son of Andrew Taylor, a native of Philadelphia, and Ella (Irwin) Taylor of Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor came west in their early years and settled in Ashland in the Rogue River Valley where their three children were born. In 1891 the family moved to the Bly section of Klamath County where Mr. Taylor raised cattle on their homestead for ten years, then carried mail for the Government from Lorella to Barnes Valley while they lived in Langell Valley. In 1908 they moved to Merrill and Mr. Taylor ranched and freighted from Montague, California, to Merrill until the coming of the railroad from Weed, California, to Klamath Falls. Mrs. Andrew Taylor died at Ashland in January of 1889 and her husband's death occurred at Merrill in 1907.
Ranching interested Ernest H. Taylor even while he was attending school in Langell Valley and Merrill for he began raising cattle early and was also employed driving freight wagons between Montague and Merrill. Later he worked for two years in the wood for Algoma Lumber Company, but by 1914 he decided to own a ranch for himself and homesteaded in the Tule Lake district and began the business of raising cattle and dairying in earnest. He acquired his present ranch near Malin in 1923, 80 acres of which is under cultivation, with hay the chief crop and some of the land used for pasture. At this time Mr. Taylor has Government land under lease in the Tule Lake district on 320 acres of which he raises grain. Another ranch located near Bly is composed of 1220 acres and makes good pasturage for the 150 head of cattle and 1000 head f sheep which he runs there. On January 1, 1909, Ernest H. Taylor and Eva Fogle were married in Klamath Falls. Mrs. Taylor was born near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on April 16, 1893, the daughter of William and Emila Fogle, will known residents of Merrill. Mr. Fogle operated a blacksmith shop in Merrill for several years, then ranched near Dorris, California, until his death which occurred at Yreka, California, in 1908. Mrs. Fogle resides with her daughter, Mrs. Taylor at present. The manifold duties of a ranch home keep Mrs. Taylor fully occupied, but she, like her husband, is greatly interested in community concerns. One son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, Vernon Ray, born September 7, 1920, near Malin. He is associated with his father in the ranching business. Ernest H. Taylor's chief interest lies in farming and improving the land which he either owns or has under lease. He votes the Republican ticket, and takes an active part in the advancement of Klamath County.
