William E. Thomas of Inglewood was in Escondido Wednesday walking and riding over the streets he said his grandfather helped lay out in 1885.
Thomas and his wife are vacationing in this section of southern California. They spent the day looking over the town and visiting with pioneer residents. From here, they went to La Jolla.
His grandfather, William W. Thomas, and two brothers, George and Frank Thomas, were the owners of the Escondido Land & Town company, which subdivided the original Rincon Del Diablo in the '80s, Thomas related.
Years ago they raised money to help the Santa Fe company finance its branch railroad from Oceanside to Escondido. George remained in this city until the middle '20s and for many years was owner of the Escondido Lumber, Hay & Grain company. William W. Thomas returned to Escondido often for visits and business trips before his death.
Among persons the couple visited with in Escondido were Guy B. Ashley, J. Van Ryan and Robert Hays.
