William E. Thomas of Inglewood was in Escondido Wednesday walking and riding over the streets he said his grandfather helped lay out in 1885.
Thomas and his wife are vacationing in this section of southern California. They spent the day looking over the town and visiting with pioneer residents. From here, they went to La Jolla.
His grandfather, William W. Thomas, and two brothers, George and Frank Thomas, were the owners of the Escondido Land & Town company, which subdivided the original Rincon Del Diablo in the '80s, Thomas related.
Years ago they raised money to help the Santa Fe company finance its branch railroad from Oceanside to Escondido. George remained in this city until the middle '20s and for many years was owner of the Escondido Lumber, Hay & Grain company. William W. Thomas returned to Escondido often for visits and business trips before his death.
Among persons the couple visited with in Escondido were Guy B. Ashley, J. Van Ryan and Robert Hays.

Sunday morning G. V. Thomas received a telegram announcing the death of his brother's wife, Mrs. W. W. Thomas, who died in Los Angeles Saturday, at 11 p. m.
The sad news came as a shock to friends and relatives, who knew that the deceased had not been ill for some months past, but thought it only a short time until she would recover.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, and son, E. C. Thomas, reached Los Angeles Friday morning from Vancouver, B. C., and were joined there by their daughter, Miss Lois Thomas, who left here recently after a residence in the city of two years. Mrs. Thomas was taken immediately to the hospital, as she had been taken seriously sick the last part of the journey. However, it was thought she would recover, but at 11 o'clock Saturday night she passed quietly and peaceably away. Present at the time of death were the husband, daughter and son.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas came to Escondido in 1885 and were identified with the early life and pioneer days of the Escondido valley, Mr. Thomas being one of the Thomas brothers who laid out the town and valley of Escondido. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas also had charge of Hotel Escondido in the early days, it then being the center of attraction of all social gatherings. After their departure, they returned to Escondido on different occasions to make their home or for an extended visit.
Mrs. Thomas was much beloved by all who knew her. The bereaved family has the deep sympathy of a large circle of friends.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday in Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Thomas and daughters, the Misses Geneva and Della, left Monday morning, by auto, for Los Angeles, to attend the funeral.
