Tornquist attended school in Paso Robles from kindergarten through high school, graduating from PRHS in 1943. She attended Stanford University from 1944 to 1945. She married Al Tornquist and has four children, Lyle Robert Tornquist, Janet Lynn Thompquist, Debra Ann Tornquist-Cragin and Gary Alan Tornquist.

Tornquist and her husband lived in Kansas after World War II before returning to Paso Robles in 1954. She also worked for the Paso Robles Press for eight years beginning in 1970.

Her Queens attendants will be classmates Marilyn Palla McWilliams and Jane Renke Bellmont.

“It was a complete surprise,” Tornquist said of being selected Queen.

Beverly Joy Lyle Tornquist

San Luis Obispo County Native

Beverly Joy Lyle Tornquist passed away peacefully and unexpectedly Friday, April 1, 2011, at home.

She was born in August 1926 in Paso Robles and lived there most of her 84 years. She graduated from Paso Robles High School in 1943 and attended Stanford University from 1944 to 1945, where she studied electrical engineering.

She met her life-long love and husband of 66 years, Al Tornquist, while he was stationed at Camp Roberts. They married Feb. 3, 1945, and lived in Kansas after World War II.

Returning to Paso Robles in 1954, Al built their house on the almond ranch they eventually took over from Bev's parents, Grace and DeWitt Lyle. There they raised their four children.

Beverly's life was filled with love, light, family, faith and service. She was active in groups such as A.F.S., Eastern Star, Episcopal Church Women, Meals on Wheels, Adopt a Road and Loaves and Fishes.

She was Roblan of the Month more than once, and in 2007, thoroughly enjoyed being Pioneer Day Queen.

Beverly was a beloved and dedicated wife, mother, and grandparent. She also loved the beach and made the annual family reunion in Cayucos a priority her entire life.

Beverly is survived by her loving and grateful family: husband, Allwin Tornquist; sons Lyle Tornquist (Janet) of Templeton and Gary Tornquist (Patti) of Seattle, Wash.; daughters Janet Thompquist (Rogan) of Paso Robles and Debra Tornquist (Richard Cragin) of Birch Bay, Wash.; nephew, Ellsworth Warner (Cathy) of Paso Robles; grandchildren Mathew Tornquist, Amber Hollinger, Jorgen Thompquist, Lesley Thompquist, Sineka Tornquist-Cragin and Scott Tornquist; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2011, at St. James' Episcopal Church, 1335 Oak St. in Paso Robles, where Al and Bev were married and have been life-long parishioners.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or St. James Church.
