FRED VAN NATTA MEETS WITH PAINFUL ACCIDENT

Head Is Cut Open In Bicycle-Buggy Collision

In a bicycle and buggy collision last night at the corner of Fifth and Fillmore streets, Fred Van Natta, 12 years old, the son of Con Van Natta of 519 Horne street, and foreman of the Capper Publications, was seriously injured. A gash five inches long was cut into the boy's skull.

The fact that the boy was struck a glancing blow probably saved his life, according to the attending physician, Dr. L. V. Sams. The skull was not fractured, but the scalp was laid back, making an ugly wound. Fifteen of twenty stitches were taken in the scalp at St. Francis hospital and Fred was resting easily at midnight. The accident occurred shortly after dark.

Mr. Van Natta said last night that he believed the man that was driving the buggy did all he could to help the boy, and he does not place any blame upon either the boy or the driver of the buggy, whose name was not remembered by Mr. Van Natta or C. N. Strawn of 511 Fillmore street, who picked the injured boy up and took him home.

As near as Mr. Strawn could describe the accident, the buggy was going west on Fifth street at Fillmore and the boy was riding on Fillmore.

"It is a bad place for an accident," said Mr. Strawn, "as there is no light at the corner. No one could tell just how the accident occurred, but it was a bad mix up."

Both Mr. and Mrs. Van Natta went with their son to the hospital after the boy had received temporary medical care. Mr. Van Natta remained all night at the hospital.
