Miss Betty Ellen Bowman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Bowman of Edinburg, became the bride of Dr. Douglas Peer Wisman, son or Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wisman of Edinburg, on Saturday, Nov. 20, at four o'clock.
Dr. Timothy Lehman, assisted by the Rev E. B. Wolford, performed the double ring ceremony in the St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church before an altar background of evergreens, bronze and white chrysanthemums and cathedral candles in candelabra.
A nuptial program of music was presented by Mrs. Madge Ring and the traditional wedding marches were used.
Soloist, Raymond W. Showalter, jr., of Harrisonburg, sang preceding the ceremony "O Perfect Love," "Ich Liebe Diche" and The Lord's Prayer at the close of the ceremony.
The bride was given in marriage by her father. Her cotillion length gown was of gardenia white imported Chantilly lace in a Tudor Rose pattern. It was fashioned with a wide V-neckline outlined with lace medallions. The long lace sleeves formed calla lily points at the wrists.
The bouffant lace skirt was over layers of tully and satin ending in a delicately scalloped hemline. Her fingertip veil of pure silk illusion fell from a heart shaped cap of matching lace etched with pearls and apulscents. She carried a cascade bouquet of white Fuji chrysanthemums.
Miss Sarah Heatwole was the maid of honor and Mrs. Lynwood Coffman served as the matron of honor. They wore identical gowns of olive green faille of princess style, with matching headbands of hunter green velvet and mitts. Their bouquets were of cascade design of bronze chrysanthemums.
William Robert Wisman was his brother's best man. Ushers were John G. Irvin, Dr. Robert B. Hodges and Dr. Edward W. Gilbert.
The reception, given by the parents of the bride, followed in the church social hall. Mrs. Homer Long cut and served the bride's cake, while Miss Betsy Praston and Mrs. Carl Feller, jr., presided at the punch bowls. The guest book was in charge of Miss Mildred Painter. Hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. Pearl Swann and Mrs. A. A. Shutters.
The couple left for a southern wedding trip.
The bride is a graduate of Edinburg High School and Madison College. She is librarian at Handley High School in Winchester. The bridegroom is an optometrist with offices in Woodstock. He graduated from Edinburg High School, Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, and the Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tenn.
Pre-nuptial parties honoring the bride were a shower by Mrs. Homer Long and Mrs. Lynwood Coffman; a dinner by Miss Bess Bowman; a shower by Miss Sarah Heatwole; and an after rehearsal party by Mrs. G. Robert Irvin and Mrs. A. A. Shutters.

MOOREFIELD — Hardy County elementary school personnel recently concluded a four-session in-service series on visual training and developmental vision conducted by Dr. Douglas P. Wisman, optometrist from Woodstock, Va.
Some 30 teachers, aides and principals participated, said Blanche Hinkle, elementary supervisor.
The method used by Dr. Wisman was developed by the Winter Haven (Fla.) Lions Research Foundation. It stresses the importance of a child's visual-tactual-kinesthetic, or eye-hand-motor, performance, and has as its premise that the importance of a child's learning to real well enough to obtain meaning from his reading ranks frist among all the learning tasks he faces as he starts school.
