Record-Herald, April 1, 19396038
A head-on crash of two automobiles on the Jamestown pike March 7 today claimed the life of one of the five injured men.
Harold F. Wolfe, 37, died suddenly at the McClellan Hospital at 2:45 o'clock this morning when unexpected complications from his injuries developed. He had been in the hospital since the crash in which he received a crushed left leg and knee, considered his most serious injuries. It is understood a blood clot formed at the seat of the injury which led to a heart condition which was the immediate cause of his death.
Doctors said Wolfe died when a blood clot, which formed when an artery was severed, reached his heart.
Frank Patton and his son Robert, of Jefferson Township, were in the other car in the crash. Robert Patton's condition was considered critical fro some time but his father escaped with minor injuries. Both are understood to be improving now.
Wert Backenstoe and Harry DeWitt were riding with Wolfe. DeWitt, in charge of the meat department of the Backenstoe Grocery, East Temple street, suffered a broken arm, and Backenstoe received cuts and bruises along with fractured ribs. Backenstoe is able to be back at his store but DeWitt still carries his arm in a sling.
The collision occurred while Wolfe, a salesman for the Eavey Grocery Company, of Xenia, was taking DeWitt and Backenstoe, to Xenia for a meeting of grocers, in his car.
It was said at the time of the accident that the two cars crashed head-on when Wolfe pulled out from behind a truck just as the Pattons came alongside it. The Pattons were enroute to Washington C. H. The accident occurred early in the evening.
Wolfe moved here from Xenia with his family four years ago. He has been connected with the Eavey Company for 12 years.
He is survived by his widow and four small children, Donald, 7, Robert 5, Judith Ann, 3, and Carolyn Jean, 3 months. His father, George R. Wolfe, lives near Xenia, and he has a brother, Marion, of Xenia, a half brother, Harry Miller, of Dayton, and a sister, Mrs. Warren Gordon, also living at Xenia.
He was a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges and the Reform Church, of Alpha, in Greene County.
The body was brought to the Klever Funeral Home here and prepared for burial and will be taken to the home at 707 North North street Sunday morning where funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment is to be in the Woodlawn cemetery, at Xenia.
