A wedding of much interest throughout this section was celebrated in New Providence church at 8:30 o'clock Thursday evening when Miss Annette Louise Houston, attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Houston of Fairfield, became the bride of James Patton Alexander.
The church was tastefully decorated in Dorothy Perkins roses and evergreens and lighted with cathedral candles. Long graceful sprays of the pink roses trailed about the white pulpit, with a background of evergreens forming an effective setting for the bridal party.
The ushers wee John L. Compbell, Wm. A. Adair, George Reverly, and Norman E. Burgess, all of Lexington. Miss Margaret S. Wade, in gold georgette and silver lace presided at the organ and rendered several selections just before the ceremony.
The bridal party entered the church to the strains of the Lohengrin bridal chorus. The groomsmen, Edward Graham, John McLaughlin, Howard Tall of Newport News, William Taylor, E. P. Davis, Francis Houston, Barclay Poague, and Harry Lyle, came down the right and left aisles and crossed to opposite sides in front of the altar. These were followed by the bridesmaids, Miss Mary Lawrence of Christiansburg and Mary Waide dressed in blue chiffon, Virginia McLaughlin and Virginia Whiting of Hampton in yellow chiffon, Nan Taylor of Waynesboro and Louise Holtzelow of Hampton in orchid chiffon, and Grace Davis of Lexington Ky., and Mary Pratt of Waynesboro in green chiffon, each maid carrying a bouquet of sweet peas in the pastel shades. The maid-of-honor, Miss Katherine Houston, sister of the bride, was gowned in a rose chiffon over silver lace and carried an arm bouquet of pink roses. Little Miss Eleanor Whipple in white organdie and carrying a basket of pink roses, preceded the bride, strewing the aisle with flowers, while Master Lee Massie McLaughlin in white, preceded the groom, bearing the ring on a dainty satin pillow.
The groom entered with his best man, J. T. McCrum of Lexington, while the bride came in on the arm of her father, who gave her in marriage. She was lovely in a gown of white flat crepe and lace with which she wore a becoming tulle veil, caught with sprays of orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and valley lilies. The ceremony was performed by Dr. Henry Woods McLaughlin, pastor of the bride.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, after which Mr. and Mrs. Alexander left for an extended trip North.
