LaFONTAINE Donald E. Garwood, 82, died at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2010 in The Hearth at Juday Creek, Granger, Indiana. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Calvin Robert and Mary Myrtle (Cordell) Garwood. Donald was orphaned when he was eight years old. The children were scattered and then reunited as adults. He married Mary Jane Alexander on October 11, 1952 in Huntington, IN. She survives.

He joined the Navy at the age of 17, serving until May of 1947 and was discharged due to a head injury. He joined the Army in September of 1948 and was honorably discharged in September of 1954. Donald worked for Dana and Body by Fisher, General Motors in Marion until retirement in 1990.

Despite his very difficult childhood, he was a devoted and good husband, father, grandfather and humanitarian. Donald enjoyed doing for others and many charities too numerous to mention them all, until dementia prevented his ability to continue in the last many years.

Donald is survived by children, Carol Brown, Gloria (Bob) Redic, Judy (Tom) Francis, Donna (John) Ervin, Duane Garwood; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Ruth Barker, Elizabeth Holland, Paul, Eugene and Louis Garwood.

Funeral service will be at 1p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2010 in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN, with the Rev. Rodger Moore officiating. Burial is in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, Indiana. Friends are welcome to stop by the house after the service.9748

Mary Jane Garwood, 93, Mishawaka (formerly from LaFontaine), went to be with the Lord at 11:49 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2018, at Tanglewood Trace in Mishawaka. She was born in Huntington on May 26, 1925, to the late Orvel and Helen (Geible) Alexander. On October 11, 1952, she wed Donald Garwood, and they shared 58 years together before he passed away in November of 2010.

Jane graduated from Huntington High School and attended one year at DePauw University in Greencastle. She worked at REMC and was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where she was actively involved in Church Women United and many good causes. She was well-traveled and enjoyed country living and playing piano.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Brown, Huntington, Gloria (Robert) Redic, Double Springs, Alabama, Judy (Thomas) Francis, Mishawaka, and Donna (John) Ervin, Roanoke, Texas; son, Duane Garwood, Huntington; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Barbara McDowell, Huntington.

The family will have a graveside service for Mary at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2018, at Gardens of Memory. Reverend Roslyn Harrison will be officiating.9748
