Robert C. Beal, 40, police ambulance driver, was killed Friday night when his private car and a taxi collided at So. 9th and J Sts. The accident occurred at 6:27 and Beal died an hour later in St. Joseph's hospital.
Two passengers in Beal's car were slightly injured. Miss Ella Mae Septon, 17, 1413 So. Stevens St., suffered multiple abrasions, contusions and shock, and Miss Margaret Nickel, 15, was treated for facial cuts and shock. Both girls were treated at Tacoma General hospital and released. Beal was returning the girls home from a Sea Scout party.
Driver of the taxi, Charles Taylor, 32, 919 So. K St., was not injured. A complete investigation of the mishap is being conducted by the police traffic division.
Beal joined the Tacoma police department Nov. 11, 1942, and since that time had served as ambulance driver.
In addition, he was regarded as an expert in first aid work and spent much of his spare time conducting classes for the Red Cross, police school and Tacoma schools.
"Beal was one of the top first aid men in the city of Tacoma and a fine policeman," Capt. P. J. Gregg said Saturday morning.
Beal was married and resided at 809 East 56th St. with his wife and daughter, Roberta, 13. He was a graduate of Sumner and Wapato schools.
He had lived in Tacoma for 20 years, was a member of the Mormon church and was active in Sea Scout work. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Hattie Davis of Utah; two brothers, Philip Beal of Tacoma, and Irvin of Montana, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Hatch of Utah.
The C. O. Lynn company will make the funeral arrangements.

Harriet Mariam Strom Beal Purdy, age 87, of Lehi, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 18, 1994 at her home, of causes incident to age. She was born June 7, 1907 in Tacoma, WA to Chriss and Thora Pederson Strom. Married Robert Clayton Beal, Jan. 1, 1934 in Tacoma. Marriage later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He died April 9, 1946. Later married Charles H. Purdy in 1955. He died in 1966.
She resided and had been employed in the Tacoma area as a secretary and a Police matron and worked for the Tacoma News Tribune for 23 years. In 1973 she moved to Lehi, UT. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survived by her daughter, Mrs. Charles (Roberta) Peterson, Lehi, UT; grandchildren, Sandy and Robert Kidd, Erda, UT, Mary and Debbie Peterson, Oceanside, CA, Lynette and Randy Lish, American Fork, UT, Ben and Con Peterson, Gillette, WY, Kalynne and Brad Barlow, Kaysville, UT, Kris Peterson and Karl Peterson, both of Lehi, UT; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley T. Strom.
Funeral held Friday, Sept. 16, 1994 in the Wing Mortuary Chapel. Burial in the Lehi City Cemetery.
