OCTOGENARIAN SUCCUMBS TO ATTACK OF PNEUMONIA

Miss Nellie Beman Answers Inevitable Summons After Five Weeks' Illness—Resident of Niles for Nearly Half a Century.

Miss Nellie E. Beman, 80 years of age, passed away at her home in North Main street yesterday afternoon, after a brief illness of pneumonia. Five weeks ago, Miss Beman contracted a severe cold, which developed into torrid pneumonia, and medical efforts were powerless to save her.

Miss Beman was born in Duck Creek, near Austintown, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Miller Beman. Early years of her life were spent in that village and later she spent a short time in Cleveland. Forty-seven years ago, Miss Beman came to Niles, taking up her residence in Butler street. In the early days of the half century she spent here, she taught school. The old town hall then accommodated the children of the city as a school, and here for many terms Miss Beman taught, establishing for herself a reputation as an eductor. Later she gave up this work and took up the occupation of tailoring which she followed as long as her health permitted.

Fifteen years ago, with her sister, Miss Belle, she moved into the house in North Main street where she resided at the time of her death. Two years ago, her sister who had been a nurse in Cleveland, and later a school teacher in this city, passed away, and since that time, she had lived alone. Nine years ago two other sisters, Mirs. Jessie Miller and Miss Mary Beman, of Cleveland, both died upon the same day. The youngest of five children Miss Beman was the last survivor of her immediate family. One cousin, Mrs. Bishop of Cleveland survives, with a nephew, Roland Shaw.

Mr. Shaw arrived in Niles this morning and arrangements were made for the funeral services. Rev. E. A. Jester will be in charge of the services which will be held from the house Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the body will be taken to Duck Creek for interment, where all the members of the family have been laid to rest.

Though of a quiet and retiring dispositon, Miss Beman had many warm friends here. She was a consistent Christian, and a member of the Methodist church. Her reputation for strictest integrity and scrupulous honesty, and her kind ways will not soon be forgotten by her friends.
