Brother of Judge Succumbs at Manila

Just two days before American troops liberated internees in the Los Banos camp north of Manila, Rev. Herbert Edgar Blair died there—"probably from malnutrition"—according to word received by his brother, David E. Blair, judge of the Springfield court of appeals.

In a letter from the Presbyterian board of foreign missions, under whose auspices Rev. Mr. Blair had spent more than 30 years in the Far East, Judge Blair was told of his brother's death.

A doctor who was in the camp had informed the board that he had officiated at Rev. Mr. Blair's funeral, and of the probably cause of death.

Rev. Mr. Blair and his wife—who is evidently well because she has sent word to her daughter in New York of her father's death—were missionaries in Korea when first taken prisoner by the Japanese.

They escaped, however, going to Shanghai and then to Manila with the understanding that they were on their way home.

This was about December 1, 1941. Some of the Korean missionaries were given passage home but the board asked some—Rev. Mr. Blair and his wife among them—to stay in Manila.

The Japanese invasion caught them there, and they were immediately interned. SInce that time Judge Blair has had no direct word from his brother.
