The death from heart disease of Judge Worth E. Caylor of the Superior court, Monday evening in his summer home at Douglas, Mich., became known yesterday when Mrs. Caylor informed William G. Wise, former law partner of her husband, of his death.
Judge Caylor was 64 years old. He had been in ill health for a number of months and had been unable to hold court since last April when a heart attack forced him to leave the bench.
He was born at Arcadia, Ind., and attended De Pauw university, where he was graduated from the law school in 1891. The following year he came to Chicago and was admitted to the Illinois bar. He served from 1895 to 1897 as an assistant to City Attorney Roy O. West, the beginning of a life long friendship with Mr. West and of Mr. Caylor's connection with the Deneen faction of the Republican party.
He later was a law partner of John J. Healy until Mr. Healy was elected state's attorney and thereafter formed the partnership with Mr. Wise which endured until Judge Caylor was elected to the bench in 1924. For 18 years he was attorney for the Chesepeake and Ohio railroad and its predecessor corporations.
In 1927 Judge Caylor became involved in a controversy with other judges of the Superior court when the court's executive committee assigned him to sit for a second consecutive year in the Criminal court. He refused to take up his duties there until the Chicago Bar association acted as a mediator in the matter, when he yielded. At the end of the year his record in the disposal of criminal cases was praised by the Chicago crime commission.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Katherine V. Caylor, Judge Caylor is survived by a duaghter, Mrs. Miriam Bolling. The family home is at 5421 Cornell avenue. The body is to be brough back to Chicago today, when funeral arrangements will be announced.
