Iowa City Press-Citizen, July 31, 19243763
Mrs. Preston C. Coast had the honor today, of sending broadcast by way of special transmission, the first pipe organ concert ever given over WHAA's aerial route to the world at large. Despite the meteorological conditions that fair-commanded statit to intervene, the reception was excellent.
Playing four blocks away from the Iowa University's station, Mrs. Coast dedicatd the new equipment of the state's radiocast, as she presided at the magic ivory keys of the massive deep-throated organ at the Methodist church—where, as church organist, she has won local repute as an artist of rare attainments.
Since 12:30 p. m. July 31, 1924, it is safe to assert she has gained a vast army of new admirers inasmuch as the mysterious ether waves carried the rich, full volume of her organ notes to home hundreds of miles away—thousands, one may almost say, inasmuch as Iowa City's programs have been heard often from "Coast to Coast" (in a dual sense, one my blithely, but truthly remak, parenthetically.)
The talented Iowa City artist may therefore anticipate tributes from distant points, which will demonstrate forcefully that the University of Iowa has achieved a new triump in the realm of transmission. That its future program may be enriched greatly and wisely, by kindred offerings from Mrs. Coast, will doubtless be the wish of a host of "listeners in", far and near.

Mr. Preston C. Coast, 66, prominent in Iowa City business activities, passed away this morning at his home, 124 Church street. In failing health for the last year, Mr. Coast's condition did not appear alarming until the last few weeks and few of his many friends were aware of his serious condition.
Mr. Coast was born in Iowa City on April 11, 1870. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William P. Coast, were among the city's most prominent pioneers. His father was active in all civic improvements and the owner of several business blocks.
After graduation from the Iowa City high school, Mr. Coast entered the University of Iowa and was a member of the team of 1888 which first adopted Rugby football. In 1927, with other members of that eleven, recognition was made by the department of athletics in conferring "I" awards to the group.
In 1924 the clothing from of Coast and Sons, later known as "Coasts," was established, and this store was recognized throughout the state and beyond as one of the noteworthy institutions in that line of business.
He was married on September 18, 1894, to Miss Grace McGee, a talented musician, who survives him. To them were born two daughters. Marjery, who was married to Donald McClain, and passed away in 1924. Another daughter, Alice, married to Mr. Paul Rubicam and living in Denver, has been visiting her parents with her young daughter the last few weeks. One brother, Mr. William O. Coast, who served this district as state representative in 1914-15, also survives. Both brothers were active members of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Mr. Coast's entire life was passed in Iowa City and he was well known to hundreds of residents here. Unselfish and unassuming in the highest degree, his artless simplicity of nature endeared him to those who knew him well.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at the Hohenschuh mortuary. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
