Clair E. Crabtree
Clair Edwin Crabtree, 51, Fort Madison RR1, died unexpectedly at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart hospital.
He was born in Fort Madison April 17, 1922, the son of Kent L. and Helen Houston Crabtree. He farmed in this community most of his life.
He married Elsie M. Williams on Dec. 24, 1943 at Merced, Calif., who survives.
Mr. Crabtree was a Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ at Denmark, and deacon of the church. Also a member of the American Legion of West Point, the Odd Fellows Lodge, and member of the Fairview Cemetery board.
He was a director of the Farmers Savings Bank of Denmark and Wever and a past treasurer and secretary of the Des Moines County Farm Service company.
Besides his wife he is survived by his mother of rural Fort Madison, a son, Gary Crabtree, Fort Madison RR1; a daughter, Peggy Crabtree, Denver, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. Lee (Wanda) Siegrist, West Point RR1; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His father preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Barr Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery with military services at the graveside.
A memorial for Mr. Crabtree has been established at the United Church of Christ in Denmark. Donations may be left at the church or the Barr Memorial Chapel.

Elsie Marcile Crabtree, age 91 of Ft. Madison passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 3:10 AM at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. She was born on July 14, 1923 in Denmark, IA to Irven and Bertha Eoff Williams. On December 24, 1943 she married Clair Crabtree in Merced, CA and he passed away on May 2, 1973. Elsie was a homemaker. She was a lifetime member of Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ and also the Plymouth Circle. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, word searches and putting puzzles together. She was a sustaining member of T.T.T. and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Survivors include her son, Gary (Marilyn) Crabtree of Ft. Madison, IA; her daughter, Peggy (Frank) Hardin of Colorado Springs, CO; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Roy Williams of Washington, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and four sisters. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ with Reverend Chad Savage officiating. The family will meet with friends from 10 AM until the time of the service at the church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ or Great River Hospice House.
