The funeral of 'Squire James Crawford, who died from paralysis Monday night in the eighty-ninth year of his age, took place yesterday at the Presbyterian Church. Prof. Swing, of Chicago, whose acquantance with the deceased extended farther back than that of any minister of the place, conducted the services, and in his remarks, with characteristic beauty and simplicity of thought and expression, sketched the experiences and events compassed within the history of such a long and useful life, paying a beautiful and grateful tribute of friendship to the memory of his honored and venerable friend. 'Squire Crawford was born January 13, 1789, in the State of Delaware, beginning life with the beginning of our country's history, before the first President took his seat. Coming West in 1815, he selected this hilltop, then a wilderness, as his future home, and returning from Philadelphia in 1817 continued his resident here until his death, witnessing this Western wilderness grow into this wonderful State of Ohio, with all its great progress, intellectual and material, then unthought of. After some years engaged in trading and mercantile pursuits, Mr. Crawford was made Justice of the Peace, which office he held in Oxford for forty years. In his manner of life he was remarkable for his simplicity, for his industry, and quiet devotion to duty, always at his post. As Magistrate, he was highly respected for his intelligent, honest, and conscientious administering of justice. As a citizen, upright and unostentatious. As a friend, social, genial, and kind. In 'Squire Crawford's death, Oxford loses its oldest and one of its best citizens. He leaves a large family, several of whom reside in Richmond, Ind. One of his daughters is proof reader in the Cincinnati Methodist Book Concern, and another is in the Oxford Citizen office. All have the sincere sympathies of this community in their bereavement.
