A mercy flight scheduled to return an elderly man, recuperating from a stroke, to his home in Harrisburgh, Pa., ended in tragedy six minutes after it began Saturday night. The patient, Albert H. Wessel, 70; his physician, Dr. WIlliam T. Booth, 48, of Coronado; and pilot of the Cessna 140, Fred E. Eisert, 34, former Escondido resident died in the wreckage of the plane on a Bonita hillside.
Mr. Wessel had charted the plane to fly him back to Pennsylvania after a visit in Coronado with his daughter, Mrs. Richard Haase. While in that city, he had suffered a stroke and only recently was considered well enough for the flight home.
The plane bearing the three men took off from Montgomery field at 6:24 p.m. Saturday. It crashed and exploded at 6:30 p.m. Civil Aeronautics Administration officials are continuing investigation of the accident, which occurred in a rain storm.
Mr. Eisert, who was born June 15, 1919, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, came to Escondido in 1934 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Eisert, Sr., who now reside on Reed road. He was graduated in 1938 from the Escondido Union high school, where he was a star on the track team.
He was married in 1939 to Miss Carol Thompson of Imperial Valley. They are the parents of two sons, Gary, 7, and Chris, 9. The Eiserts home was in Clairemont subdivision near San Diego.
He attended San Diego State college until 1942, when he became a civil instructor for the Ryan Aircraft company in San Diego and Tucson, Ariz. The for three years he flew with the Air Transport Command as a flight officer in the China-Burma-India theater.
After his release from the command late in 1945, he joined the Gibbs Flying Service in San Diego. He returned to his studies at San Diego State and was graduated in 1946. He was chief pilot and director of training at Gibbs. It was Bill Gibbs who drove here Saturday night to notify the Eiserts of the tragedy which had killed their son. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Kensington Community church, corner of Marlborough drive and Jefferson Avenue, San Diego. Cremation will follow.
