Robert Engle, Telephone Wire Chief, Dies at 42

Robert E. Engle, 42, Associated Telephone Co. wire chief for southern Santa Barbara County, collapsed at his desk yesterday afternoon and died in a hospital of cerebral hemorrhage last evening.

Known as "Bob" to his many friends in this area, he had recently been promoted to the job of assigning all telephone numbers, routing and dispatching telephone trouble shooters, and heading the information department of the company. He lived at 107 W. Islay St.

A native of California, he was born on May 16, 1907, at Pomona. He spent his early years at Reedley, near Fresno.

He had been a telephone man for more than 26 years, and his father, B. G. Engle of Santa Ynez was in the business before him for 32 years. His younger brother George is also with the telephone company here.

First Job

At the age of 16 he took his first job as a cable splicer's helper. In a year he completed the regular four-year advancement to regular cable splicer for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Fresno. In 1926 he came to Santa Barbara.

"When I first came here, I was fed up with the telephone business," Engle told a News-Press reporter recently, "but after looking at other jobs I applied for a job with the old Santa Barbara Telephone Co. as a cable splicer's apprentice again."

He was soon back as a regular splicer, and did the job for the next 18 years, being transferred to Long Beach in 1939 when the Associated Telephone Co. acquired the Santa Barbara Co. Meantime, he married Lorna Mathews, a North Dakota native whom he met here.

Transferred

When World War II broke out, he was transferred into the installation and maintenance department at Long Beach, the work he had been doing since. In 1945 he asked for and received a transfer back to the Channel City.

He was a member of the Pioneers of America, a telephone men's group.

His favorite sport was bowling and he and his brother George were both on the Associated's team. On weekends the brothers liked to go up to their parents' ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley.

He is survived by his wife; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burrel G. Engle; two brothers, Burrel Edwin of Santa Ynez and George Richard of Santa Barbara; and a sister, Mrs. Charles L. Strong.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Tuesday at the Welch and Ryce Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Santa Barbara Cemetery.
