Maude E. French, 91, widow of Harold G. French and a longtime Hudson resident, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 31, 1996, at the Hunt Community in Nashua, where she had lived for the past nine years.
Mrs. French was named Citizen of the Year in Hudson in 1971, the first woman to receive this recognition. She was active in civic affairs and was a leader in the 4-H program for many years.
Mrs. French assisted her husband in the establishment of the French Insurance Agency in Hudson in 1928; the agency is now operated by their son, Gordon. She was the first teacher of home economics at Alvirne High School. She taught elementary school prior to her marriage.
Her interest in Alvirne High School continued for many years and she was especially supportive of the school's agricultural division. In 1987, a plaque was installed in the new agricultural addition in her honor.
Mrs. French held membership in the Hudson Fortnightly Club for many years and held all local offices, was a past president of the New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs and helped to establish a program for gifted girls to attend summer sessions at St. Paul School in Concord, served as a trustee for Hills Memorial Library in Hudson for many years and helped to establish the Children's Room of the Library.
Mrs. French was active with the former Hudson Players, a dramatic group, and in later years gave book reviews and talks on New England Churches accompanied by a slide presentation.
Before her marriage to Harold G. French in 1925, she had served as Hillsborough County 4-H Club agent. In 1926 she opened a 4-H Club and was a leader for 33 years. Her club won a national 4-H award in 1936 and 10 members of the club won trips to Chicago for the national 4-H congress. She served as president of the N.H. 4-H Camp and Bear Brook for three years and was a member of the Governor's Commission on Leisure time Activities. In 1964, the Hillsborough County 4-H Directors named a building in honor of Mr. and Mrs. French for their effort in a fund-raising committee to build a county youth center in New Boston.
She was an active member of the Hudson Community Church for many years. She taught Sunday school and sang with the church choir. At the time of her death, she held membership in the First Baptist Church of Hudson.
She attended schools in Henniker and was a graduate of Keene Normal School.
Mrs. French was born in Leominster, Mass., on Feb. 5, 1904, daughter of the late Frank Albyn and Agnes Susan (Goodwin) Sargent.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold G. French, in 1983, and by a son, Richard S. French, of Carmel Valley, Calif., in 1991.
