Wadleigh, Longtime New Hampshire r-H Leader, Dies

DURHAM, N.H. (AP)—Rep. Clarence B. Wadleigh, R-Durham, state 4-H leader for 36 years, died Friday at a Dover hospital after a long illness. He was 69.

Wadleigh organized the state 4-H program at the University of New Hampshire in 1920 and held the post of state leader until 1956, when he resigned to join the International Cooperation Administration as a youth advisor, working in Greece and Cambodia.

He retired to Durham in 1956.

He was serving his first term in the House.

Cornelia F. Wadleigh

Cornelia F. Wadleigh, 97, of Bridgton, Maine, and formerly of Nashua, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1993, at the home of her daughter after a brief illness.

Mrs. Wadleigh taught home economics at the Amoskeag mills in Manchester until she married Clarence B. Wadleigh in 1922. She then moved to Durham.

While in her 60's, she took part in President Truman's Plus Four Program and, with her husband, traveled to Cambodia and Greece.

She was an active member of the Durham Community Church.

She attended schools in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1915. She also graduated from the Fannie Farmer Cooking School in Boston.

She was born in Nashua on May 3, 1895, daughter of the late Menzell and Jennie Stevens French. She moved to Bridgton in 1985.

Her husband died in 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth W. Oberg of Bridgton and Mary W. Austin of Mountain View, Calif.; two sons, Clarence B. Wadleigh Jr. of Palo Alto, Calif., and Ralph S. Wadleigh of Beaverton, Ore.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Raymond Funeral Home in Bridgton, Maine, is in charge of arrangements.
