BAY POINT HOME IS SCENE OF CEREMONY

The home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Scott, in Bay Point, has been chosen by Betsy Scott Higgins and John H. Gunn as the scene of their marriage this afternoon.

Dr. Wiley Scott of Miami Beach Community Church was to read the vows at 4:30 p.m. with only the families present. Betsy and John have planned a two-weeks wedding trip, and will live in Coconut Grove when they return.

Betsy is a graduate of Vassar and a member of the Beaux Arts.

John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Rice Gunn, Coral Gables, and practices law in Miami. He was graduated from the University of Arkansas and the University of Miami Law School, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif, Kappa Sigma and Phi Delta Phi. He also is a member of the Bath Club, Century Club and national, state and local bar associations.

GUNN

John Houston, 61, a resident of Coral Gables since 1947, died Wed. morning Aug. 27, of a heart attack. For many years, Mr. Gunn has been a prominent attorney in the bankruptcy field & was a partner in the law firm of Gunn, Venney & Buhler. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association's Corporate Banking & Business Law Section & was a distinguished lecturer for both the American & Florida Bar Associations' Continuing Legal Education Programs on matters involving commercial & banking law. He served as a Director of the Dade County Bar Association from 1956 through 1959 & from 1966 through 1969 & was Chairman & a member of its Bankruptcy Committee for many years. He was member of the Missouri, Florida & Federal Bar Associations & the American Society of Hospital Attorneys. Mr. Gunn was born in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1918 & lived in Joplin, Missouri before he entered the University of Arkansas where he graduated in 1938. He was a Phi Beta Kapp & a member of the Order of the Coif. He attended the University of Colorado & the University of Missouri where he received his law degree in 1941. Mr. Gunn served in the Army Reserve during World War II in the office of the Administrator of Export Control in 1941, on the Board of Economic Warfare in 1942 & on General Douglas MacArthur's staff in the Western Pacific for the balance of the War years. From 1945 to 1947 he served in the United States Military Government in Berlin, Germany. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve & received a Bronze Star. In recent years, he has been active in the Institute of Maya Studies, having served as a Director & Treasurer. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Joslin Diabetes Foundation, Inc. & Cordis Corporation. Mr. Gunn is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Scott; daughter, Laurie Scott & son, John Houston, Jr. There will be a memorial services of Fri. at 2:00 P.M. at the Plymouth Congregational Church. GUNN, Elizabeth "Betsy" Scott, Miami native, died April 3 at the age of 90 after a long illness.

She was born on August 25, 1922, to Dorothy Seymour Scott and Paul Ryrie Scott, a founding partner of Scott, McCarthy, Steel, Hector & Davis, one of Miami's first and most prominent law firms. She attended Cushman School in Miami and Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, Conn., before graduating from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 1953, she married Miami attorney John Houston Gunn, the love of her life. The couple raised their two children, John Jr. and Laurie, in Coral Gables. Mr. and Mrs. Gunn shared a love of art, Mayan studies, golfing with friends at Riviera Country Club and world travel. When she was 77 years old, she took two of her granddaughters on safari to Africa, giving them memories they will treasure forever

After her husband died in 1980, Betsy went to work. As a staff member for the Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association she played a role in the Coconut Grove Arts Festivals growth into South Florida's premier arts event. Community serves was a lifelong passion. She took special pride in her many years of volunteer work for the 11th Judicial District Guardian Ad Litem Program, serving as a court-certified advocate and protector of at-risk children. In 1998, she was recipient of the program's Spirit of Excellence Award. For many years, she volunteered one day a week at Recording for the Blind. "community service was a value instilled in us from day one," says daughter Laurie Gunn Castano, vice president of marketing for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami. "We were always out with her doing something to help."

Betsy was smart, poised, polite and a great listener. She lover her family and her children's friends, and was a mentor and friend to many who will miss enjoying a glass of wine and great conversation with her at home. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Gunn Castano of Miami (Juan), son John Houston Gunn Jr (Carol) of Rollinsville, Colo., and granddaughters Karina Castano of Miami, Nicole Castano of Miami, and Sarah Elizabeth Gunn of Rollinsville, Colo.

Her family will celebrate her life in Missouri, where she will be buried alongside her husband. in lieu of flowers, please honor her memory with a donation to Voices for Children, Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic or a charity of your choice.
