Marriage Announcements and News

Fort Scott Daily Tribune-Monitor, February 23, 19189040

Houston-Gunn Wedding

The Daily Democrat-News, published at Marshall, Mo., gives the account of the Houston-Gunn wedding of Wednesday, which will be of general interest to their friends here. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gunn will be at home after April 1, in Fort Scott, upon their return from their honeymoon trip in the South.

The account reads as follows:

"At the country home of the bride near Malta Bend, a quiet, but beautiful wedding was solemnized Wednesday, February 20, at 12:30 p. m. The contracting parties were Miss Jessie Irene Houston and William Rice Gunn of Fort Scott, Kan.

"The ceremony room was exquisite in floral decoration and the receiving rooms were all graced with early spring flowers. The bride's sister, Miss Dorothy Houston, was her maid of honor and Rev. Mr. Clark, pastor of the Methodist church, was the officiating minister. The bride wore a modish tailored suit of mouse brown purree twill, with hat, gloves and shoes ensuit.

"The invitations to the wedding included only relatives and a limited number of close friends. A buffet luncheon followed the ceremony and the bride and groom left soon after for an extended wedding trip which will include New York first, then points in Florida and will end with a brief sojourn in Cuba.

"Since the announcement of the engagement and before, much interest has centered in this marriage on account of the prominence of the families of the bride and groom. Miss Houston has been reared in western Saline where her family have been potent factors in the agricultural, commercial, educational and social advancement of the community. She is also one of the county's highly cultured and lovable young ladies, has a charming personality and the characteristics that make lasting friendships, and will be greatly missed in the social life of her neighborhood.

Mr. Gunn is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Gunn of Fort Scott, Kan., and the nephew of Charles Gunn of Lamar. The family is a fine one and the father and uncle representatives of the bests interests of the states in which they live. Charles Gunn of south Missouri is a long time and close friend of the writer, they having been neighbors wile living in Sedalia during the sixties and seventies. The groom, who is a traveling man, is well known in Saline county, having made frequent trips here and has the esteem and confidence of those who have met him. They are receiving the hearty congratulations of a wide circle of relatives and friends.

"Those present at the wedding from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Gunn, mother and father of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Calhoun, Mrs. W. S. McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rice, Mrs. Fannie Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Irvine, Huston Irvine, all of Fort Scott.

"The delightful musical program rendered before the entrance of the bridal party to the ceremony room included a wedding anthem sung by Rev. and Mrs. Clark and vocal solo, 'O Promise Me,' sung by Mrs. Percy Houston. Miss Abinade Fulton played the accompaniments and also the wedding march.

"The bride's bouquet, a shower of bride's roses and sweet peas, was a marvel of beauty, as was the one carried by the maid of honor, which was pink roses and pink sweet peas."
