PNEUMONIA CAUSED DEATH OF FRED HALL

Popular East Randolph Man Passed on Saturday.

A PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN

And Postmaster of the Eastern Village Succumbed Suddenly—A Great Shock to Many Close Friends.

Death took a heavy toll from this community when shortly after 9 o'clock Saturday morning Fred A. Hall, of East Randolph was called for the final accounting. While friends had learned that Mr. Hall was ill it was not realized that his ailment was serious and the announcement of a fatal termination came as a severe shock to all. Strong, genial and virile as he always appeared it was some time before a full realization of the truth came home to the public that had always regarded Mr. Hall as one of the fixtures of the community with whom the thought of death was not to be associated. It is probably no exaggeration to say that the taking off of no man in the village would have caused more general regret and kindly expressions heard on all sides in both Randolph and East Randolph make up a testimonial to his character and virtues which may be regarded as extraordinary.

Mr. Hall had been confined to his home for about ten days with pneumonia but daily reports from his bedside were encouraging and it was generally understood that the danger point had been passed. On Saturday morning, however, there was a sudden change for the worse and in spite of all that medical skill and careful nursing could accomplish death ensued within a few hours.

Fred A. Hall was the eldest son of Amos A. and Frances Jones Hall and was born in East Randolph on August 5, 1861. On April 7, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Lillian Wheeler of Little Valley whose death occurred January 21, 1908. No children were born to this union and on September 8, 1909, Mr. Hall took as his second wife Mrs. Love Norton of Canada, a daughter of A. P. Holcomb of East Randolph, who survivies together with one sister, Mrs. Cora L. Stegman of Hoboken, N. J., three brothers, L. C. and George W. Hall of Newark, N. J., and Charles P. Hall of East Randolph, and his aged mother.

Mr. Hall was one of those genial, whole-souled gentlemen who makes a friend of every acquaintance. In his business relations he was honorable and straight-forward and his home life was ideal. He was a member of the Episcopal church, of Conewango lodge, No. 282, I. O. O. F., the Royal Arcanum, the Golden Seal, the Modern woodmen and the Maccabees in all of which orders he took an active interest. He was always prominent in the business life of the community having been a member of the firm of Hall & Waters, harness makers, for a number of years and during the past six years had been postmaster of the village of East Randolph.

In politics he was a staunch supporter of the Republican party and its policies and gave freely of his time in support of the organization. He was a member of the town board of Randolph for several years and held the office of assessor for two terms. He had also served both as president and trustee of the village.

Words seem poverty stricken in presence of the death of a good citizen but the finest tribute than can be paid to Mr. Hall will be the testimony of the neighbors and friends who knew him in the ordinary walks of life and who came in daily contact with him. That testimony is all to the same effect—that he was the salt of the earth.
