LARAMIE — Funeral services for John David Hitchcock, 94, will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dave Lillie officiating.
Interment will follow at Greenhill Cemetery. A visitation will be from 2 until 6 p.m., Monday, at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home.
He died Nov. 21, 2003, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.
Born April 7, 1909, in Jaffna, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he was the son of William and Harriet Hitchcock, who were teachers at the Congregational American Ceylon Mission.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1932 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1935.
He worked as an apiculturist at the USDA Beekeeping Research Laboratory in Laramie from 1936 until 1973, becoming its research leader in 1960.
In 1942, he joined the U. S. Army and was in the first draft to be called from Laramie. He served during WW II with overseas duty in India, Burma and the Philippines. He was assigned to the Malaria Survey Unit and the Sanitation Corps of Engineers, completing his service in 1946.
on June 15, 1946, in Laramie, he married Marion Prahl.
He was a member of several professional organizations including the International Bee Research Association, the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, Albany County Retired Teachers, and NARFF. He was inducted into the honor societies Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
Also a member of non-professional organizations, he belonged the the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, and was active in the First United Methodist Church choir for over 40 years. He was active in other organizations, as well, like Garden Club and Rotary International.
His other interests included ice skating, square dancing, photography, stamp collecting and entertaining children with magic.
He also enjoyed telling stories, especially puns, and he was frequently asked to be a master of ceremonies for various events. During retirement, he and his wife enjoyed travel throughout the world.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Arnold, and Penny Cutts and her husband, all of Casper; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Memorial in his honor can be made to the First United Methodist Church or a charity of choice. Services are under the direction of Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home.

She died at the Ivinson Home for Ladies on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009.
