Prof. William E. Hitchcock and family, consisting of wife and two children, arrived in town Friday. He is professor at a college in Ceylon. He arrived in New York about three weeks ago, having visited his brother, Justus, in Medway and his sister, Mrs. Grow, in Springfield, this state. He spoke in the church Sunday morning upon his work and the condition of the natives and missionary success in the part of the island where he is. Mr. Hitchcock has been away from the country 12 years at the present time, having spent several years there previously. He left Wednesday for Iowa, where his wife's mother lives. He expects to remain in the country a year or more.

WEST MEDWAY, Dec. 19—The funeral of Prof. William E. Hitchcock, retired, will be held at the West Medway Congregational Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Lawrence R. Howard, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dr. Alden Hyde Clark, secretary of the American board in charge of foreign missions in Ceylon and India.
Prof. Hitchcock, who was in his 80th year, died at his home this morning. He was born in Westminster, Vt., and educated at Westboro high school, class of 1875, and Amherst College, B. A. 1879 and M. A. 1882. For 40 years he served under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Ceylon.
Prof. Hitchcock first went to Ceylon in 1880 as a tutor at Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai, Ceylon. He was later given life appointment under the board, and worked as mission secretary, treasurer, and business agent, with headquarters at Uduppiddi. Prof. Hitchcock was retired and place on the Roll of Honor in 1925.
Mr. Hitchcock is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie Houston Hitchcock; three sons, Henry Porter of Maryland, Richard Albert of the Public Library, New York City, and John David, doing graduate and research work at the University of Minnesota; and a sister, Nora Hitchcock of West Medway.
