Lafayette Journal and Courier, September 19, 19397595
Gary city hall was closed Tuesday afternoon while funeral services for John N. Holloway, 52, president of the Gary park board, and former will known Lafayette resident, were held at a funeral chapel at 675 Adams street. The funeral cortege was to proceed to this city where it was planned to bury the remains in the family lot in Spring Vale cemetery late in the afternoon. Mr. Holloway was injured in an automobile collision in Gary several days ago.
Mr. Holloway, born and raised in Lafayette, was educated in the public schools and was married here in 1911 to Miss Fern Farley, formerly of Huntington. He was formerly employed as a machinist at the Monon shops, leaving here about 25 years ago for Gary where he became prominent in industrial, political and civic life, having run for mayor of Gary on the republican ticket in 1934.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Holloway, old-time residents, he made many friends as a boy and young man here. His father died several years ago, but his mother still lives in the old family home at 1003 Roberts street. Besides his wife and daughter, Jean, in Gary, he leaves his mother, a brother, Charles, in Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Ralph Noland, Fort Wayne. The mother was called to Gary several days ago after he had been seriously hurt.
His death occurred at the Methodist hospital, Gary, Sunday, after a long period of unconsciousness due to a skull fracture. He was employed as master mechanic of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern railroad.
Holloway's auto struck a curbing, overturned on its side and skidded for 70 feet after colliding with a meat truck driven by Alex Einikis, 1748 Grant street, Gary, who was booked on a manslaughter charge and released on $1,000 bond pending Coroner J. Robert Doty's inquiry.
