Barbara Houston Pelot

December 7, 1923 - September 23, 2017

Barbara Houston Pelot, 93, was born on December 7, 1923, and died on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at the University Hospital in Columbia after a long illness and a life of service and community involvement. She was a devout Christian, who never passed up an opportunity to share her faith with others. A former president of Church Women United in Missouri, she had been a member of Forum Boulevard Christian Church in Columbia, and a leader in the Missouri Union Presbyterial, Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marshall, and Malta Bend United Methodist Church.

She grew up on the family’s Edenvale Farms, a Missouri Century Farm in Malta Bend, which she later owned and managed. Barbara received an A.A. from Christian College (now Columbia College) and a B.A. in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she lived in the Kappa Kappa Gamma house and sang in the University chorus. She taught third grade in the North Kansas City school district, and developed the first Kindergarten in the Malta Bend school district, where she also taught fourth grade and was High School Librarian.

Barbara became quite active in the University of Missouri Alumni Association, holding many local, district, and national offices, eventually serving as the second woman to be President of the National Board of Directors; she was a recipient of the Alumni Association’s Faculty-Alumni Award and a Citation of Merit from the College of Arts and Science Alumni Association. She was a Life Member of the Alumni Association, and a member of the Jefferson Club, the Columns Club, and the University Club. An avid Mizzou sports fan – she rarely missed a basketball or football game — Barbara was a Faurot Fellow and a member of the Big “M” Club, Missouri Athletic Scholarship Associates, and a “Directors Level” member of the Tiger Scholarship Fund.

An elegant lady who loved to host bridge clubs and dinner parties, Barbara volunteered and was a member or leader in many organizations: American Association of University Women, Country Club of Missouri, Delta Kappa Gamma, Fitzgibbon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Food Bank, Friends of Arrow Rock, Hospital Bazaar, March of Dimes, Marshall Chamber of Commerce, Matron's Club, Meals on Wheels, Missouri State Sheriff's Association, Monday Club, Order of the Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter JS, Red Cross, and the State of Missouri Bicentennial Commission.

She is survived by her son, Richard Barger, and his wife, Rita and her constant companion, Copy Cat. Preceding her in death were her adoptive parents, Lawrence Nelson Houston and Edith Franklin Houston, her husbands, Harry D. Barger, Roger Philip Thornton, James E. Moore, and John Pelot, and her good friend, Marvin Lunbeck.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017, at Forum Boulevard Christian Church, 3900 Forum Blvd., Columbia, MO 65203. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at Malta Bend Cemetery in Malta Bend, MO. Memorials may be made to University of Mo-Columbia or church of donor’s choice in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Friends may sign the online register book at www.campbell-lewis.com
