Gerald Houston, 88, of Fort Madison died at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at West Point Care Center in West Point. Born April 24, 1922, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Myron and Reika Houston. On Oct. 8, 1947, he married Cecelia Buechel in Fort Madison. Mr. Houston was a lifelong farmer and worked as a commercial fisherman. He attended veteran's trade school for young farmers studying farming technologies. He graduated from Denmark Academy High School in 1939. He served in the Army 12th Armored Division during the invasion of Germany during World War II, and served a year of occupation duty in Austria after the war. He enjoyed hunting, especially coyote hunting, cattle auctions, working on the farm, listening to the Chicago Cubs on his radio and an occasional afternoon at Catfish Bend Casino. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carol Peitz of Houghton and Linda Menke of West Point; three sons, Jerry Houston, Jeff Houston and Rex Houston, all of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The body has been cremated. The private family graveside memorial service with military rites for Mr. Houston will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for the Denmark Fire and Rescue.
