Calvin Ray Hughes

JEFFERSON - Calvin Ray Hughes, 76, of Jefferson died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.

The son of Ross and Bertha (Weed0 Hughes, he was born in Brownsville and grew up in Stayton. He lived most of his life in Jefferson.

A World War II veteran and hero, he served in the Navy and was awarded several medals, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

He married Donora McManus in 1974 in Salem.

Mr. Hughes worked 42 years for Freres Building Supply. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, the Albany American Legion Post, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Distinguished Flying Crosses Association and the USS Yorktown Association.

Surviving are wife Donora; sons David Hughes of Alaska, Brian Hughes of Salem and Jim McManus of Jefferson; daughters, Susan Chambers of Dallas, Jessica Homewood of Jefferson and Nancy Watt of Tigard; and seven grandchildren.

Also surviving are brother Edward Hughes of Stayton; and sisters Ruby Stayton and Helen Burr, both of Stayton, and Margaret Burr of Sublimity.

A memorial service for Mr. Hughes will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Hall, 1215 Pacific Blvd. S. S. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
