Irvine-Davis Wedding In Danville

The marriage of Miss Helen Brown Irvine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Irvine of Danville, to Mr. Joe Goodridge Davis of Danville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fleet Davis of LaGrange, was solemnized at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, on North First street in the presence of the two immediate families. Dr. J. E. Moss, pastor of the Methodist church, Danville, performed the ceremony.

After a wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Davis will make their home in Danville were Mr. Davis is an attorney-at-law.

Mrs. Davis was graduated from the University of Kentucky where she is a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and for the past year has been a member of the faculty of Danville high school.

Mr. Davis attended Kentucky Wesleyan College, University of Louisville Law School, Jefferson Law School, Louisville, and Washington and Lee Law School.

Former Danville city attorney, civic leader Joe Davis Sr. dies

Joe Goodridge Davis Sr., a former Danville city attorney and civic leader, died yesterday at Friendship House nursing home in Danville, He was 88.

Mr. Davis was city attorney during the 1950s. He also was a former attorney for the Boyle County Industrial Foundation and a director emeritus of Farmers National Bank in Danville. He retired in the late 1960s after practicing law for more than 50 years.

"Joe Davis was a fine lawyer. He cared about ... elderly people. He genuinely tried to make life easier for them," Danville lawyer William M. Dishman said. "He was a courtly gentleman. It's a true loss to our bar association."

Integrity was Mr. Davis' trademark. He also helped young lawyers, Dishman said.

Mr. Davis was a past president of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce and a former chairman of the Danville Salvation Army board. He helped found the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society. A member of the Danville Rotary Club, he was president of that organization in the 1940s and became a Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary's highest honors in 1988.

He was a member of The Presbyterian Church and a former chairman of the Centenary United Methodist Church board in Danville.

Mr. Davis, a Shelby County native, received a bachelor's degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and a law degree from the University of Louisville. He did post-graduate studies in law at Washington and Lee University.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Irvine Davis; two sons, Joe G. Davis Jr. of Atlanta and John T. Davis, who is managing editor of the Danville Advocate-Messenger; a brother; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Presbyterian Church in Danville. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home in Danville. Contributions are suggested to the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society; The Presbyterian Church Building Fund; or the Danville Rotary Club Scholarship Fund.
